Much time and skill is needed to weave a handmade carpet. An experienced weaver can take anywhere from 5 -15 months to create a 9x12 rug, depending on the fineness of the weave. The labor intensity of producing carpets makes them true luxury items.
Over time these well used items need care. A handmade carpet can last anywhere from decades to hundreds of years with proper treatment. This needs the skills of an experienced restorer.
Restoring an oriental rug requires knowledge of every aspect of the weaving process including:
- Types of materials used
- Spinning of wool
- Dyeing of yarns
- Multiple weaving techniques
- Finishing processes
Restoration is both an art and a science.
